Written
and directed by Anton Zane
Based by
on an original
play Anton Zane, the lead character Mayuko, who
much to her family's dismay, flees Japan
to live
in
the
United
States.
She longs for home after living in the demise
of her unfulfilled dreams and resorting to working
in a peep show parlor.
Mayuko telephones her family
in Japan. She learns through her angry and traditionally
minded father that her grandfather who she was
very close to has recently died. Mayuko's father
tells her to never come home. Mayuko devises
a plan to conduct a Japanese festival ceremony
and call on her grandfather's spirit to help
guide her home.
She takes what she thinks are
sleeping pills and tries to stay awake long enough
to make contact with her grandfather in the afterworld.
She is suddenly awakened by a customer named
Galopin who believes he is the world's greatest
pantomime.
Galopin and Mayuko's longing
for what they can't have causes a very unusual
bond and fondness helping Mayuko ultimately
choose life over death.
